Fundação Dorina Nowill

The Dot

The Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind is a Brazilian philanthropic institution that has for over 70 years led several initiatives for the social inclusion of visually impaired people. Chief among those efforts is the popularization of the Braille writing system, a method based on patterns of raised dots that can be perceived tactically.

Being the primary element of this system, which has given access to the written word for countless of visually impaired people, the dot received a tribute in the form of an animated film, created byLew'Lara\TBWA and Vetor Zero. The voiceover ponders over the various common-sense interpretations of the word “dot”, before stating the special meaning it has for a visually impaired person. At the same time, a series of elegantly stark black and white graphics provide a visual interpretation of the narrative, oscillating between the abstract and the figurative, the digital and the organic, blending various animation and filmmaking techniques.
